Class Placement Parent Input (all grades)

If your child is returning to Forestville next school year, we offer you the opportunity to share any comments you would like regarding class placements. If you know that your family will not be joining us for the 2024-2025 school year, please reach out to Ms. Kirk at [email protected] or 703-404-6000 to let us know.

Our staff will be working on tentative class groupings this spring, with classroom assignments finalized in mid-August.  As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships. Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests. Due to the many factors we must consider in creating classroom placements, including the staffing of our teachers, requests for a specific teacher cannot be honored.

If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete this optional form by Friday, May 10th for it to be taken into consideration. There is no need to complete the form if you do not have any information you would like us to consider. Due to the tight timeline before school is out, late submissions cannot be considered. Thank you!

🩺Immunizations

All students entering 7th grade will be required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

  • To meet the Meningococcal (MenACWY) requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
  • As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.

ACTION REQUESTED: Please provide one of the following immunization documents to the Student Information Assistant (SIA) or Registrar at your child’s school as soon as possible:

  • An immunization record showing that the child has received at least one dose of each of the required immunizations listed above.
  • A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the vaccine(s) was given.
  • A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.

Community Peer Program (Preschool)

Forestville Elementary School is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program in the 2024-2025 school year! The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for our students to participate in integration activities with typically developing peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are age 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs.  Feel free to contact Meagan Bahamonde ([email protected]) for further explanation of our program and to request an interest form.

✅ Take the Family Engagement Survey Today!

If you haven’t already, please take FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey today! Survey results will help us to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community.

Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey is available in 10 languages. Please check your email for a message from our partner, K12 Insight, with a link to the survey or access the survey now. Your voice matters!

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Eating Disorder Notification

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Portrait of a Graduate (POG) Information for Home

This year, we’re working on developing our Portrait of a Graduate skill of being a good Communicator. We’ll be sharing ideas of ways you can connect PoG skills at home throughout the year.

One tip: better questions get better answers! When you are talking to your kids at home, consider these ideas so that students will talk, share, and discuss important skills.

How I'm using skills:

  • “Who in your class did you work with today? What did you work on?”
  • “What new ideas did you create today?”
  • “How or what did you share today? With your teacher? With friends?”
  • “What are you doing in school that you are excited about? What do you like about it?”
  • “What is the hardest thing you did today?  What made it hard? What are you doing to make it seem easier?”
  • “What are you proud of that you are doing? Why?”
  • “Who is someone that you enjoy working with? (Teacher or student) What makes them enjoyable?”

How I'm growing:

  • “What are you getting better at?  How do you know?”
  • “What do you do best?  Why is it important?”

Why the skills are important:

Have a Conversation! Consider sharing stories about how YOU work with others, share ideas, and solve problems at work, home, and in the community. This will help students see how these skills are important in your life, too, and help them see connections between school skills and adult skills! “Today I . . . “ or “At my job, I . . .”

Birthday Treats Reminder

As a reminder, in order to make sure that all of our students are safe as possible, there should not be any bringing in of birthday treats to the classroom or sharing during lunch time.

We recognize that celebrations are very important, so we have shared some additional ways to recognize students on their birthdays. Listed below are just a few suggested ways to recognize your child's special day, should you choose to participate. If you do, please make sure to communicate with your child's teacher in advance:

  • Donate a book to the school or your childs class library in honor of their birthday
  • Donate a board game to be used for indoor recess
  • Donate a jump rope or ball for outdoor recess games
  • Have your child read a story or share a special talent or skill, with their class

We are committed to allowing all of our students to fully participate in celebratory activities, while maintaining a safe environment for all. Thank you for understanding and we appreciate your support in ensuring the safety and health of all of our Forestville students.
